- What's your favourite thing to do?
Follow-up: Let them ramble. The detours are the good bits.

- What's your favourite food?
Follow-up: And the food they'd never, ever eat.

Before and after the conversation
- Ask whether your child would like to join in. Skip any question and stop when they have had enough; this is not a test.
- Keep the same core questions and their exact wording next year. Add a follow-up only if it helps the conversation.
- If they are not answering questions yet, record a short ordinary sound or your own observation. Do not prompt or assess speech development.
- Use a phone recorder if you like. Make a short sound check and keep the original answer, including pauses and detours, rather than coaching it.
- Label the audio with date, age and occasion. Keep an agreed private backup; this printed card contains no audio.
